Free Grace Position
We seek to align ourselves with Free Grace theology to make certain all teaching in our local church remains consistent. We feel the need to make a clear distinction between issues that relate to discipleship and issues that relate to eternal life so as to rightly divide the Word of God and bring His clarity on such issues to light.
First Evangelical Free Church Affirmation of Free Grace Theology
1) Everyone is born into sin and under condemnation
Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sin of the whole world (John 1:29). He has removed the sin
barrier which separated us from God. However, we remain condemned in sin and lack eternal life.
To be freed from the consequence of sin and in order to receive the gift of eternal life, we must
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31). Believing in Jesus Christ alone
accomplishes this eternal transaction.
2) Assurance of eternal life is the birthright of every believer
Our eternal salvation is "not of works, lest anyone should boast" (Eph 2:9). Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God. Jesus Christ is fully God, having all authority in heaven and on earth (Mt 28:18).
Jesus Christ is the Savior, guaranteeing eternal life to all who believe in Him (John 6:47).
Whoever believes in Jesus Christ shall not perish but has everlasting life (John 3:16).
3) Believers are called to be disciples
Discipleship is the process by which believers grow to become more and more like Christ. This
process is supported by preaching Jesus Christ and teaching every person in all wisdom, so as to
“present every person complete in Christ Jesus” (Col 1:28).
Discipleship involves “working out your salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil 2:12), understanding
that we are “created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Eph 2:10) so that we obey the directive to “add
to your faith” (2 Pet 1:5-7). All this is in light of our very sober future meeting where, “we must all
appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Cor. 5:10) to test the quality of each person’s work. “If
anyone’s work which he has built endures…reward. If anyone’s work is burned…loss; but he
himself will be saved, yet so as through fire” (1 Cor 3:13-15).
4) We affirm "Free Grace" theology, which stands in contrast to "Lordship Salvation" theology.
We emphasize that eternal life is received the moment one believes in Jesus Christ. Once a
sinner believes in Jesus Christ alone, they need never second guess their possession of the gift
of God, eternal life (Rom 6:23).
No act of obedience such as commitment to obey, good works (bearing fruit), sorrow for sin,
turning from one’s sin, baptism or submission to the Lordship of Christ may be added to the sole
condition of belief for receiving eternal life. We hold acts of obedience to be discipleship issues
that are not necessarily manifested uniformly in every believer.
