• FEFC Bible Pledge This is the Bible. It is the Word of God. The Holy Spirit inspired it, Jesus authenticated it, God has protected it. This book is God’s Light for the Pathways of My Life. The Bible is like no other book in the world. It is the truth of God to change me and to mold me into the person God wants me to be. Now as we study God’s Word together, I will open my heart, my mind and my will to God and to the authority of this Sacred Book. I invite the Holy Spirit to speak to me through His Word, which is living, and powerful. “Is Your Faith Alive?” • Three weeks ago…. • Fellowship Church • The worship service began • Pre-recorded message given by Bill Hybels the pastor of Willow Creek Church in the Chicago Area • Ephesians 2:1-10 – “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” • Glorious doctrine of regeneration – the truth that God makes us alive spiritually by His glorious grace and His boundless mercy when we put our faith and trust in His Son Jesus Christ. • Bill Hybels then told a story • It was a very effective illustration to contrast the difference between someone who is alive versus someone who is dead. • It was a really great message and a really horrible one – both at the same time. • Question asked “Have you been regenerated?” • “multiple confirmations” • Showed a video from Bill Hybels message Beyond Belief: Raised Up • James 2:14-17; 20-26 – “14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”[b]And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” • James 2 is talking to Christians about the Christian Life. • Is possible for a Christian to sin and sin badly and sin over a period of time. • It is possible for a person to become a Christian but never grow in their faith in Christ. • It is possible for a person to be a Christian but give very little evidence, especially evidence that the rest of us can see, of being a Christian. • “DEAD FAITH” • Three Important things: 1. James is talking to Christians about the importance of good works in every Christian’s life. “Brethren”, “my beloved brethren” – James 1:2, 16,19; James 2:1, 5, 14; James 3:1, 10, 12; James 4:11; James 5: 7, 9, 10, 12, 19 2. Eternal Salvation is NOT the subject James is discussing in James 2 3. You must understand that when James talks about “justification” in James 2, he is talking about tow different kinds of Justification – Justification by faith alone before God & Justification by works before men. • How about You? Have you been regenerated? Have you come to believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior? • If you are a Christian, a believer in Jesus Christ, have you grown in your faith and is your faith, a LIVING FAITH? What Should you Do if Your Faith Is Not Alive? • Repent of the sins that are in your life that keep you from growing spiritually • Allow the Holy Spirit to use the Word of God to REKINDLE your faith • Declare to the Lord that in 2010 you will grow by getting into the Word of God in a serious and significant way and you will become a man or a woman who has a living faith. IS YOUR FAITH ALIVE?
